More than 27 million American families purchase a live Christmas tree for the holiday, and decorating it is a cherished tradition.

But after lighting up the home for a week or so, those real trees start to look a little sad.

They start to turn brown. Their needles fall off and like the wrapping paper from the presents underneath them, they are tossed out.

Each year, some 10 million Christmas trees end up in landfills, but it doesn’t have to end like that.

Elephants don’t know that Christmas is over.

At the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee and its zoos around the country, discarded trees become playthings.

Pine needles are good to eat whether you’re an elephant or a goat.

Lewis Farms and Petting Zoo in Michigan is just one of the farms that welcomes old Christmas trees as a treat for their animals.

Fish like trees, too.

They provide underwater shade as well as lots of hiding spots,

so state environmental officials in Texas to West Virginia to California collect trees to sink into lakes and reservoirs to provide habitat for small fish.

The prospect of an easy meal attracts the larger sport fish which attract anglers, which is good for tourism.

And with a little help from chemistry, those pine needles can be used in products like paint and food sweeteners,

thanks to the work of Cynthia Kartey at the University of Sheffield.

The major composition of pine needle is a complex by polymer known as lignocellulose.

The complexity of this polymer makes it unattractive or useless for direct application in industry,

therefore my research is focused on the degradation of this complex polymer which is the dominant composition of pine needles into other valuable products,

such as glucose, acetic acid and phenol.

It will be some time before her process is commercially viable, but one thing is certain.

There will be more trees to munch on and play with and hide in for everyone next year.
